GSLIS File Storage Stephanie Pierson & Brianna Walker Instructional Technology & Design Graduate Assistant
Before we begin • http://www.lis.illinois.edu/helpdesk/filestorage
Breakdown of options • H-drive • Accessible only to you • Available on all GSLIS domain machines • Can be accessed from afar through SFTP • I-drive • Public – published on the web • Divided into three sections: • Courseweb_html – put content on the web for anyone to see • Courseweb_htmls- only accessible with a GSLIS login • People_html – personal website, publically accessible
But first! • You have to activate your i-drive: • http://gumms.lis.illinois.edu/ • Course Web/DB Access -> Enable Course (homei or I: drive) Webspace-> Enable Web Space
How to access your space • SFTP using your favorite client • We’ll use Cyberduck today • It’s open-source and mac & windows compatible • http://cyberduck.ch/ • If you want to use Fetch/WinSCP/whatever else • That’s fine and they look nearly identical
Configuring Cyberduck to access i-drive • When you first open Cyberduck, you probably see something like this: • Click the plus (+) button near the bottom left corner to add a new bookmarked connection
Adding a new connection • This new connection form will appear • You may need to toggle “More Options” to see the bottom half • There are only a few settings to enter.
Configuration: 6 steps • Connection type: SFTP • Nickname: idrive • Server: login1.lis.illinois.edu • Port:22 • Username: YOURNETID • Path: /homei/users/YOURNETID
Close the configuration window • You should see your new connection listed in the browser window • Click on it • Enter your GSLISusername and password to access your files
Creating new folders… • Once you enter the file right click in the blank space or click the gear at the top • Select “New Folder” andenter a name
Adding Content • Click on the gear again and select “Upload.” • You can also drag and drop files into Cyberduck • Can create new bookmarks from here as well
Locating your files on the web • http://people.lis.illinois.edu/~NetID/filename • http://courseweb.lis.illinois.edu/~NetID/filename • https://courseweb.lis.illinois.edu/~NetID/filename • Be sure to include the ”s” in “https”
Tips for file storage URL • Avoiding putting spaces in file names. Use an underscore (_) instead • Be sure to include the entire path for folders, if you have them. For example, the URL may be: http://courseweb.lis.illinois.edu/~spierso2/folder/folder/filename • URLS are case sensitive • Files will be available up to 2 years after you graduate
