Old The old leather helmet The first helmets were used in the early 1900s and were just a leather covering. These helmets had little or no padding.
First improvements • By 1940 the leather helmet had some padding, and by 1950 teams converted toplastic padded helmets
The face bar • The first bar was used by Otto Graham after suffering a jaw injury and needing some protection placed over his face to safely return to play. The NFL soon adopted the new design.
Padding • betweenthe 1960s and 1980s manufacturers developed foam padding for the helmets to create a shock absorber, and today an airbladder is used for the same purpose.
Radio • One of the most significant advancements was the development of the helmet radio in 1990, allowing players to talk to their coach duringgame.
Good and bad • The most obvious improvement of the football helmet outer shell was its safety to the player, the face mask also helped in this category protecting the jaw bone and face • The main disadvantage was the lose of view creating tunnel vision for the player when the face mask was developed
