Warm Up In your Literature book, look up the definition for "symbol" and copy it into your notes. Then copy down your assigned chapter question on the next slide. You will be responsible for presenting the answer to this question, along with supporting text!

Symbol - a person, place or thing that stands for something else. What is the purpose of a symbol in a story? - could build suspense - makes the reader think -figurative, not literal - creates a deeper meaning
Think back to the story The Red Guards. What was the other literary symbol that was used by the author? What did it represent? photographs - memories, the link to the past
We will now read chapters 2 and 3 ofTouching Spirit Bear together. As we read, identify two symbols (hint...there will be one in each chapter) and jot down what they are and what each one represents.
Symbol in chapter 2 What is the symbol? at'oow - a blanket with totems on it What does it represent? it represents trust For Garvey, it's been handed down from one generation to the next. When he gives it to Cole, he shows that he believes in him, that Garvey wants to show Cole the value of trust.
Symbol in chapter 3 What is the symbol? the cake and the ingredients What does it represent? the ingredients - the negative or bad experiences in your life the cake - the positive outcome that can be a result of these ingredients Yummy!!!
