Therapy & Mentor Horticulture program Est. 2010
Two Programs #1. Community Service Program : #2. Inmate Mentoring Program :
Description: • Volunteer Inmates plant and tend gardens using donated seeds from local non-profit organizations. Fresh produce raised from the donated seeds will be donated to local shelters and local Food Banks in the community.
The mentor program through the Prison volunteer program will help develop the inmates volunteering working the program into better citizens upon release.
USP Leavenworth enjoys the community’s involvement through well established partnerships. This enhances positive public relations.
In addition to benefitting the community, these programs are beneficial to the inmates who learn new and affordable marketable and social skills.
Estimations': • Working beside the USP Leavenworth Food Service Horticulture Program. The Therapy Horticulture Program will need to donate a 2/3 ($1,500) of all seeds to be used in the overall Horticulture Program. • We are estimating that during this season period (May through November) that between 150,000 lbs to 200,000 lbs of produce will be donated.
Last season FY10 • Over 80,000 lbs of produce was donated , with a cost savings over $200,000. • Over 4,000 families received produce through this program.
