  7. Paul Ryan’s FY12 Budget • $4.5 trillion in budget cuts • $4.3 trillion in tax cuts • Major structural changes to Medicare and Medicaid

  8. Impact on Poor and Hungry People Nearly 2/3 of cuts came from low-income programs

  9. Impact on SNAP • Cut by $127 billion • Nearly a 20% cut • Turned into a block grant • Could kick 8 to 10 million people off the program • Could cut benefits for families of four by $147 a month, or $1,764 in 2012

  10. Overall Impact • Cuts all non-security appropriated programs by 1/3 over 10 years • Most of the federal government, aside from Social Security, health care, and defense, would cease to exist by 2050

  11. What can we expect this year? • Very similar to last year’s budget • Below the caps agreed to in the August debt ceiling deal • Sets up bad appropriations bills • Political posturing
