Is my child at risk for retention? • California State Law requires that parents be notified if a child is At Risk of Retention (ARR). • Criteria for ARR is the same as the criteria for Title I with the exception of Special Education students. • Your child’s teacher will discuss this with you at Parent Teacher Conferences.

How can I help my child with reading? • Read aloud to your child • Encourage your child to be aware of “What Good Readers Do” • Model how important reading is in your life • Limit and monitor television viewing, computer time, and video games • DON’T SKIP DAILY READING!
How can I help my child with math? • Help your child look for and find patterns • Find real life math applications • Demonstrate that there are lots of ways to solve a problem • Celebrate math progress • Model how important math is in your life • Limit and monitor television viewing, computer time, and video games 1RQL349
What can I do? • Visit the school and talk to the teacher • Ask if your child participates in activities • Does he have a good attitude toward school? • Ask what specific things can you help with • Visit the school’s website: • http://vejar.wvusd.k12.ca.us/ • The website may give information such as testing dates and homework assignments
Check Assignments • Check that your child has finished assignments • Check a few problems discuss errors if any • Ask your child to explain her thinking • Discuss alternate ways to solve problems • Do NOT do the work for them, help, but do not allow the child to become dependent on you. • COMMUNICATE STRUGGLES TO THE TEACHER

Vejar’s Academic Achievement • API: 17 point growth in 2012, 9 point growth in 2013 for a total score of 921. The state average is 791. • AYP Math: All growth targets met in 2012 and 2013. 91.5% of Vejar students are proficient in math. The state average is 59.8% • AYP Language Arts: All but 2 growth targets met in 2012. All but 1 growth targets met in 2013. 76.4% of Vejar students are proficient in language arts. The state average is 56.7%
Federal Mandates for Improvement • Every school receiving Title I funds must meet yearly growth targets set by the No Child Left Behind Act of 200 • These growth targets are known as AYP – Adequate Yearly Progress • Any school receiving federal funds and not meeting AYP goals for 2 consecutive years will be deemed a Program Improvement School • As of September 2013, over 90% of Title I Schools in California are Program Improvement
Program Improvement Schools in PI must implement reform measures. At Vejar, these include: • Scientifically-based research to ensure all groups of students will meet the state’s achievement targets • High quality professional development for school staff that will lead to removing the school from PI status • Strategies to promote effective parental involvement in the school • Before and After-school math and language arts tutoring for identified students
