  9. Tangential • Doesn’t capture or recognize important themes, characteristics or elements. Strays from the topic. Focuses on unimportant details or ideas.

  11. Helping RockoSocko “My name is RockoSocko, and I’m researching to answer the question, “Could we live without rules.” I’ve found a helpful source, which I’ve provided for you entitled, “Is Anarchy Possible.” It all seems so important though! How can I figure out what is essential and what is tangential?”

  12. Anarchist want to get rid of government

  13. Quick Summary • The purpose of the article is to persuade people that we could live without a government; the article is directed ad individuals who like the idea of anarchy but don’t think it’s possible. The author’s perspective on rules is that they are the cause of problematic behavior.

  14. Quick Context • I’ll use this source to explore just how far some people will go to avoid rules. I want to use the anarchist perspective as an extreme that we can probably learn from even if it seems crazy at first. I’m also especially curious if the anarchist are in favor of some rules. If so, I need to find out which ones.

  15. Essential or tangential? • “What is the existence of the average man to-day? Almost all your time is given to earning your livelihood. You are so busy making a living that you hardly have time left to live, to enjoy life. Neither the time nor the money.”

  16. Tangential • Doesn’t capture or recognize important themes, characteristics or elements. Strays from the topic. Focuses on unimportant details or ideas.

  17. Essential or tangential? • Do you need government to tell you not to step in front of a moving automobile? Do you need it to order you not to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge or from the Eiffel Tower?

  18. Tangential

  19. Essential or tangential? • The Christs and the Buddhas of all ages were not prompted by material considerations but by their devotion to justice, what they believed to be right. The pioneers in every human endeavor have suffered pain, persecution, even death, not for personal gain but because of their faith in the justice of their cause.

  20. Essential • Insightful, captures the heart of things. Identifies key themes, characteristics or elements. Sees deep structures. Shows an appreciation for the relative importance of things.

  21. Essential or tangential? • Certainly the worker has nothing to lose by a change from government and capitalism to a condition of no government, of Anarchy.

  22. Tangential

  23. Essential or tangential? • It directs you what to eat and drink, and imprisons or shoots you for disobeying. It commands you and dominates every step of your life. It treats you as a bad boy or as an irresponsible child who needs the strong hand of a guardian, but if you disobey it holds you responsible, nevertheless.
