4th August 2011 • Police shoot & kill 29 year old Mark Duggan during an attempt to arrest him; • A bullet reported lodged in a police radio, initially believed to have been fired by Duggan, was later proven to be a police bullet that passed through Duggan’s body
6th August 2011 • A meeting was held between local Community Leaders (in Tottenham) and Police; police warned about possible riots if local concerns not addressed • A protest is held, finishing at Tottenham Police Station; dissatisfied with the seniority of the officers sent to speak with them, the crowd of 200 stayed longer than intended
6th August 2011 (ctd) • Violence begins to flare towards dusk; • Reports later come in that the police had attacked and pushed to the ground a 16 year old girl • Rioting began as evening came on; there are further reports of large groups of people arriving ‘prepared’ with’ fireworks and petrol cans’
7th August 2011 • Rioting and looting takes place in the London districts of Brixton, Enfield, Islington, Wood Green and in Oxford Circus in the city centre
8th August 2011 • The evening sees significant outbreaks of rioting and looting in Battersea, Brixton, Bromley, Camden, Chingford Mount, Croydon, Ealing, East Ham, Hackney, Harrow, Lewisham, Peckham, Stratford, Waltham Forest, Woolich and Wood Green • Two men taken from riot-affected areas die in hospital • Smaller-scale riots are reported in Birmingham, Bristol, Gloucester, Gillingham & Nottingham
9th August 2011 • Following the announcement that 10,000 extra police officers will be on the streets of London, the capital is fairly quiet • Riots/Looting continues in Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, West Bromwich, Wolverhampton, Bury, Liverpool, Manchester, Rochdale, Salford, Wythenshawe, Sefton and Wirral
10th August 2011 • London enjoys a second quiet night as police begin a series of arrests in the capital • Three men are killed in Birmingham in a hit-and-run incident related to the riots • Looting and violence continue in Liverpool and Manchester • This represents the last night of major disturbances
15th August 2011 • Up to 3100 people were arrested, over 1100 of whom appeared in court • Between 17%-25% of those charged were under 18 • The ‘vast majority’ of those charged were under 25 • Almost all the defendants were male
Media Studies • Our job is not to try to determine why these riots happened • Our job is to look at the different ways in which the reporting of these riots represents the parties involved, namely: • The Rioters • The Police • The Public (i.e. those not rioting/looting)
