NatBes Demo Presentation by: Edith Cowan University
Overview to NatBes • National Benchmarking System for Higher Education Student Statistics • Funding was provided under DEEWR’s Workplace Productivity Program, Round 1 • Based on DEEWR data • To be available freely to public and other Uni’s • The major benefit to the sector is deeper/richer data and ability to undertake comparative analysis ie benchmarking.
NatBes’ Complexity • Datasets – A small number of large tables
NatBes’ Complexity • Dynamic datasets – The small number of datasets have constantly changing contents as DEEWR adds/removes Elements • Free access – Condition of WPP Grant is that access is free and therefore this is reflected in design • Expert HE Knowledge/No HE Knowledge – need to establish a middle ground, but favoring Expert knowledge given the inherent nature of NatBes • Security and auditing – need to be internally firewalled within ECU so no un-authorised access can occur, even within ECU
User Pre-requisites for NatBes • Basic computer competency • Ability to work with raw data and import into relevant software – spreadsheets, databases, SAS, SPSS etc • Familiarity with Australian Higher Education Standards • To integrate and optimize the use of NatBes, consideration was made to allow the importation of data from NatBes into data-warehouses. However, this conflicts with a range of privacy and confidentiality issues.
Current Status of NatBes • Majority of data is loaded – • 2. 12 fixes are required – • Issues with separator characters in raw data • User friendliness • Modification of data suppression rules • Relationship of Enrolment and Load dimensions • Adding in 2008 data • Multi selections with the wizard
Query • Wizard • ( https://natbes.ecu.edu.au/ ) • NB: Results are subject to testing/correction
Demo • ( https://natbes.ecu.edu.au/ ) • By way of 7 Examples showing • Institutional Benchmarking • Course Benchmarking • TER Benchmarking • NB: Results are subject to testing/correction
Example 1 • Institutional Benchmarking - Undertaken for DVC(R) • For Domestic HDR, ECU classified its student places as “RTS Funded” (330) or “Internally Funded” (270). There are ramifications for Faculties in respect to income received. • Question: How does ECU compare to other Uni’s with regards to allocation of these places in 2007?
Example 2 • Institutional Benchmarking to ECU’s KPI’s • Question: How Does ECU’s Progress Rate for Domestic Students that are “Internal” compare to say the former “New Generation Universities” in 2007?
Progress Rate 2007 – All Course Levels for Internal Students New Generation Universities
Example 3 • Institutional Benchmarking of ATSI Commencing Retention Rates • Question: How Does ECU’s Retention Rate for Commencing ATSI compare to “New Generation Universities” in 2007?
Retention Rate 2007 – All Course Levels for ATSI, Commencing Students
Example 4 • Benchmarking of “Basis of Admission” • Question: How does ECU’s Basis of Admission into NURSING (FOE) Bachelor Pass Courses for Commencing Australian Citizens compare to “New Generation Universities”?
Basis of Admission in Nursing Bachelor Pass Courses for Commencing Australian Students – ECU compared to NGUs
Example 5 • Benchmarking by Location (Postcode) • Question: What proportion of the Joondalup postcode does ECU have for Bachelor Pass Australian Students?
Details Postcode benchmarking - which suburbs do NDA Australian Bachelor Pass Students) live in?
Example 6 • Benchmarking of Courses • Question: Which Universities offer Bachelor Pass courses in Nursing and what are their Progress, Retention rates?
Progress Rates for Courses Requires a software fix to be progressed
Example 7 • Equity Benchmarking • Enrolment dataset contains – • Disability • Gender • Age Group • New to HE • Home Language (used for NESB) • Year of Arrival in Australia • Home/Term Locations (used in SES)
