Three Questions “Do I really belong among the people of God since I am so _______________?” “How am I supposed to do life so intimately with all these different people?” “How do I continue Jesus’ mission to love?” Luke arranges his material to highlight Jesus’ radical, inclusive love for all who embrace Him.
BIG IDEA: Listening to the teaching of Jesus is the most important component of discipleship because it determines how one should serve.
BIG IDEA: You gotta sit before you serve.
BIG IDEA: Sit. Then serve.
Martha and Mary Luke 10:38-39 38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching.

Re: reading the Gospels • The stories and details that the Gospel writers include are important. • The order in which they place their stories are important as well. • Luke didn’t arrange his Gospel chronologically. • Why does Luke put this story where he puts it?
“…but one thing is necessary.” Luke 10:23-24 23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

“…but one thing is necessary.” • Psalm 16:5-6, 11 5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance… 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”
God’s Single-Minded Heart • God’s heart is single-minded. He wants to be God towards those who love Him. God says, “There’s no higher way to love me than to sit at my feet and listen to me. I reward those who genuinely seek me. I want you to know my voice. I want to lead you. I want to be your Shepherd. I want to be your King.”

From A Praying Life by Paul Miller • “American culture is probably the hardest place in the world to learn to pray. We are so busy that when we slow down to pray, we find it uncomfortable. We prize accomplishments, production. But prayer is nothing but talking to God. It feels useless, as if we are wasting time. Every bone in our bodies scream, ‘Get to work.’” • “What does heavy laden feel like? … You have so many problems you don’t even know where to start. You can’t do life on your own anymore. Jesus wants you to come to him that way! Your weariness drives you to him.”
From A Praying Life by Paul Miller • “If we try to be quiet, we are assaulted by what C. S. Lewis called ‘the Kingdom of Noise.’ Everywhere we go we hear background noise. If the noise isn’t provided for us, we can bring our own via iPod. Even our church services have that same restless energy. There is little space to be still before God. We want our money’s worth, so something should always happen. We are uncomfortable with prayer.” • “Learning to pray doesn’t offer us a less busy life; it offers us a less busy heart.”
“…but one thing is necessary.” Psalm 63:1-4 1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you;my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. 3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.4 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.
“…but one thing is necessary.” Psalm 63:5-8 5 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,6 when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night;7 for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.8 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.
