CAHSEE Academy Day 3 Moreno Valley High School January 2104
Reading Comprehension On the CAHSEE you will be given several passages to read, followed by a series of multiple-choice questions that test your understanding of the text. There are a total of 38 reading comprehension questions on the CAHSEE: 18 questions based on informational (factual) text 20 questions based on literary text (i.e. poems, plays, short stories, and memoir).
Reading Strategies for the CAHSEE • There are five distinct types of questions on the CAHSEE: • Right There! • In Other Words . . . • Up Here! • What’s the Big Idea? • Read All! We will review and apply these strategies with released test questions and other materials today during CAHSEE Academy.
Skimming and Scanning • Strategies for “Right There” Question • Skim and scan to find the particular fact or detail • Look for an answer choice stated in the same words.
Use this “TV guide” to answer the questions in your packet. You will be scanning to find the answers.
Question Stems “In Other Words” questions will be formatted like the questions above. You will know to look for the same information that is in the question.
READ ALL Look out for this type of Question!
EXAMPLE Question STEMS Change generally happens over time to a character or person. You will need to look for clues throughout the passage. It is likely that the author has given direct or indirect characterization throughout the passage you are asked to read. Again, the learning process this character had is something that likely occurred over time in the passage.
Reference SHEET • Your handouts have a chart titled “Guidelines for Determining Purpose and Tone,” which demonstrates how connected an author’s purpose (to persuade, inform, or entertain) is connected to the tone of the written work. (A portion of the chart is here on this slide.)
SAMPLE CAHSEE QUESTION This question is also from the example titled “A Day Away”
Reminders! • Please take the CAHSEE seriously! • Pass it this time, and stay on track to earn your diploma! • Be sure to pay attention in class for more test prep. strategies and activities.
THANK YOU! Best of LUCK!
