The Americas Before Contact • Native population = 50 to 100 million • Approximately 500 + Native American tribes • Highly organized societies (villages and semi-nomadic)
The First “Settlements” • American Indians settled the Americas approx. 40,000 years ago • 1565 Spain established a fort at St. Augustine in Florida (oldest European settlement in North America) • The Spanish introduced horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, and new vocabulary (mustang, bronco, rodeo) to the Americas Horrible Histories: American Report Spain
The Effects of Contact • 80 to 100 % of Native American populations wiped out by European diseases (such as smallpox and measles) • Why? - Native Americans were geographically cut off from these diseases - did not live in large cities or have contact w/ different people • Results: - Europeans encountered fewer Native Americans = less resistance - Europeans took Native American territories with ease and made it their own
Relations • At first some on both sides were friendly • As more Europeans arrived relations began to change • Europeans begin enslaving Natives
European Colonization • With smaller populations of Natives and more advanced weapons Europeans began to colonize the Americas • Colonies - Settlements in conquered lands; physically separate from, but under control of another country • Mercantilism– an economic policy used in colonies; a country uses colonies to obtain raw materials to make into products.
