Early People of South America Lesson 3: The Inca
A Vast Empire • Humans began living throughout South America at least 11,000 years ago • Some built villages that became large cities and empires • The Inca Empire was the largest in the Americas and developed in the Andes Mountains
Machu Picchu • Machu Picchu – a mountaintop city in the Incan Empire believed to be a religious center
Inca Contributions • Preserved their dead using mummification • Created sundials to help with planting and harvesting crops • Built roads and suspension bridges
The Inca Legacy • Inca Empire lasted less than 100 years • Civil War broke out 1527 making the empire weak • 1532 Francisco Pizarro, a Spanish conquistador, defeated the Incan army and in 1572 the last Incan emperor was killed and the empire defeated
