Decimals. What good is maths?. Decimals:. In our number system we use a dot called a decimal point to separate whole numbers from fractions. The digit 2= 2/10. The digit 7= 7/100. The digit 9= 9/1000 Thus 5∙279 = 5 2/10+7/100+9/1000 =200/1000+70/1000+9/1000

Decimals What good is maths?
Decimals: In our number system we use a dot called a decimal point to separate whole numbers from fractions.
The digit 2= 2/10. The digit 7= 7/100. The digit 9= 9/1000 Thus 5∙279 = 5 2/10+7/100+9/1000 =200/1000+70/1000+9/1000 = 5 279/1000
Decimals are so important because they help you add and subtract money : If you were shopping and if something cost €19.99 we would know that €20.00 would be enough if we had no decimal point we would think it would cost €1999!
If you wanted to purchase a car on hire purchase We would have to be able to calculate how much money we would need for a deposit and how much we would have to pay monthly for the car and whether or not we could afford to pay this out of our wages every month. So for every step of this process we are using maths and decimal points without even realising
Without Decimals how would we manage our Wages, Taxes, Bills and everyday spending.
We use decimals in everyday life without even realising it. So sometimes when we think “what good is maths” we have to realise that without maths things would be much more difficult
