HAPPY PI DAY (3.14) Pi day is celebrated on March 14 at the Exploratorium in San Francisco (March 14 is 3/14). Pi was known by the Egyptians, who calculated it to be approximately (4/3)^4 which equals 3.1604. The earliest known reference to pi occurs in a Middle Kingdom papyrus scroll, written around 1650 BC by a scribe named Ahmes. He began the scroll with the words: "The Entrance Into the Knowledge of All Existing Things" and remarked in passing that he composed the scroll "in likeness to writings made of old." Toward the end of the scroll, which is composed of various mathematical problems and their solutions, the area of a circle is found using a rough sort of pi (3.14).
OBJECTIVE • (Part I) You will become familiar with the metric system and how to convert units using it. • (Part II) You will be asked to recall the 4-step method to problem solving and apply it to solving problems involving the metric system.
LAUCH: CHANGING METRIC UNITS (Part I) • To change from one unit to another within the metric system, you either multiply or divide by powers of 10 • 10, 100, 1000, 0.1, etc. • To change from a larger unitto a smaller unit, you need to multiply. • To change from a smaller unit to a larger unit, you need to divide.
HOW TO MULTIPLY x 1,000 x 100 x 10 km m cm mm ÷ 1,000 ÷ 100 ÷ 10 DIVIDE
EXAMPLES • 345 mL = _______ L • Remember, 1 liter = 1,000 milliliters • Or 1,000 milliliters = 1 L • So, we divide by 1,000 to convert to liters. • Answer: 345 ÷ 1000 = 0.345 • 0.9 cm = _______ mm • Remember, 1 cm = 10 mm • So, we multiply by 10 to convert to milliliters • Answer: 0.9 x 10 = 9 0.345 9

EXAMPLE • Tyra exercises every morning by running twice around a rectangular neighborhood. The route she takes is 5.2 kilometers long for one circuit. How many meters does she run in total? ANSWER: 10,400 meters
EXAMPLE • Rashid cut a ribbon into 5 equal pieces. If each piece was 24 centimeters long, how long was the ribbon in meters before he cut it? ANSWER: 1.2 meters
EXPLORE • Create three word problems involving converting metric units. • One problem should involve length, one should involve mass, and the other should involve capacity. • Ensure your word problems are reasonable and try to make them about things that interest you.
