Quick Summary • The European imperialists realize the importance of controlling the Middle East, for if controlled, it would provide a quicker route to trades in Africa and India. Therefore, Europe imperializes the Middle East, and the kingdoms within are helplessly divided into spheres of influences
Cause • The Ottoman Empire is not able to keep up with the modernizing world, for its rulers are corrupt and prevent the Empire from advancing; it is weak • Russia wants to gain access to the Atlantic Ocean by obtaining land connected to the Black Sea, which in turn, is connected to the Mediterranean Sea
Course • Russia declares war against the Ottoman Empire • Britain and France combines forces with the Ottoman Empire to prevent the Russians from obtaining such a strategic piece of land; thus the Crimean War begins • Eventually, the Russians are defeated
Consequence • Russia is thrown into a great disadvantage as the Treaty of Paris of 1856 marks the Black Sea as a neutral territory • However, the Ottoman Empire is still incompetent in protecting itself • Britain and France use this to their advantage to create spheres of influences throughout the Empire
