Kayla JohnsSenior Project Should euthanasia be legal with restrictions?
Why I chose my topic. • I chose to do my project on whether or not euthanasia should be legal, because it is a very debatable topic in the healthcare. • Eventually I hope to become a nurse and would like to be aware of the topics that face us every day.
What is Euthanasia? • Euthanasia is the killing of a suffering patient. • A doctor has to give the patient an excessive amount of medication which will eventually kill them. • There are only three states out of the fifty that have euthanasia legal, they are Oregon, Washington, and Montana.
When it should be legal. • A patient who is being considered must have a terminal disease, and there has to be no cure or treatment to help them. • At least one family member must agree. • There should be two doctors that agree that it is the best choice for the patient.
Why it should be legal. • A patient has a right to treatment, so they should also have the right to die. • A patients also has choice to stay in a hospice where they have to sign a DNR (do not resesitate).
Why it isn’t legal • The government regulates whether the state has the choice of euthanasia. • Many disagree with euthanasia because of their religions and see it as suicide. • This is why there is a difference between church and state.
Product • For my product I decided to volunteer at the Laurels of Forest Glen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. • I had one on one time with patients and made a scrap book. • Mentor: Carla Norris
Successes • Working with patients who agree with my topic and research. • Understanding the everyday lifestyle of patients with no cure. • Forming relationships with the residents.
Challenges • Finding patients who could understand my topic and actually give me feedback. • Having consent forms to take pictures for my scrapbook.
