  1. N-TEN Conference - November 20th, 2002 How web-based technology can support people and improve services, or: How I learned to love Amortization Marlowe Greenberg – CEO, Foothold Technology

  2. The Problem  Nonprofit operations are formed by disparate legislation and disparate funding streams.  As a result, the way we track data reflects this confusion. This has led to 1000s of staff hours per year reporting data. Contradictory and confusing compliance rules.  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  3. A Solution • The system must be: 1) So user-friendly it’s self-explanatory 2) RSA: Reliable, Secure and Affordable 3) Point of Service data entry for all programs, people and agencies 4) Shareable among all people, programs and agencies • Two pieces to the solution: • Relational Databases and • Web Delivery  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  4. A Solution – Relational Databases • Relational Databases Provide: 1) Many-to-many relationships (for reporting purposes) 2) Automated tasks (reminders, meds, notes) 3) Easy aggregation (census, demographics) 4) Complete integration (billing, scheduling)  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  5. A Solution – Web-based Delivery • Two pieces to the solution: • Relational Databases and • Web Delivery • Everything can be done without a WAN • And, of course, amortization  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  6. Amortization AM·OR·TIZE   1) To liquidate gradually 2) To liquidate (a debt, such as a mortgage) by installment payments or payment into a sinking fund. 3) To write off an expenditure (office equipment, for example) by prorating over a certain period. from Dictionary.com  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  7. A Solution – Web-based Delivery  Application Service Providers (ASPs) offer a revolutionary new way for nonprofits to use technology.  ASPs provide software as a service rather than a product.  Pricing structures vary, but usually a rental model – you won’t “own” it anyway.  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  8. A Solution – Web-based Delivery  Amortization over time and across many customers. • Software related costs go down: • A)bugs can be fixed overnight • B) upgrades happen instantly and automatically • PC related costs go down: • A)much less expensive, older computers – 486MHz, and enough RAM to run IE or Netscape • Network related costs go down: • A)Nothing to maintain at your office  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  9. A Solution – Web-based Delivery • Professional safeguards and redundancy become affordable: • A) Multiple servers in multiple locations • B) multiple points of access to servers – no single point of failure • C) Diesel generators • D) Porous floors  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  10. ASPs – A Success Story • DePaul offers services in 13 counties across two states and serves some 4,500 individuals each year • 2,000 beds and over 1,100 employees • 3 corporations and a $50,000,000 budget  MH Clinics, adult homes, even a T-Shirt factory  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  11. ASPs – A Success Story  Live working database in New York State took 2 months. State-wide rollout took 6 months.  New transportation module, new billing functionality  Trained highly qualified team of in-house trainers, only used included training sessions  Makes full use of in-house help desk  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  12. ASPs – A Success Story  AWARDS is completely integrated into DePaul’s operations. A direct link to their database from their website  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  13. ASPs – A Success Story  Any new development sponsored by an agency is made available to other agencies for free. Our belief in the power of communal best practices – only feasible in a web-based environment.  “We are submitting our first numbers to CCSI today. What had taken me…30+ hours to do now takes about 15 minutes..” Jeff Smith  Medicaid Billing via AWARDS: “I had no problems, it’s much, much faster and much, much easier. Thank you for adding this to our system!” – Transitional Services, Inc.  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.

  14. ASPs – The Promise of Technology  Databases and ASPs: The freedom to focus on your mission  2002, Foothold Technology, Inc.
