Response during an earthquake How can people respond during an earthquake? • Go under reinforced doorways • Seek shelter under strong tables • Move away from windows • Do not go outside How can people respond straight after an earthquake? • Turn heaters off • Disconnect electricity • Fill bath with water
Emergency response after an earthquake (days) • If earthquake is life-threatening a Civil Defence emergency will be declared • When it is safe enough, emergency services will: • Put out fires • Search for/ rescue survivors (Search and Rescue teams may be called in) • Treat the injured
Temporary hospitals and evacuation centres may be set up • All economic activity stops in evacuated area
Clean-up and assessment (weeks) • Government assesses damage to decide on emergency assistance • Weakened buildings are demolished and rubble removed • Infrastructure/ essential services are restored as quickly as possible
Repair (months) • Evacuees return home (if allowed) • Insurance claims are made • Businesses reopen or close down permanently • Major repairs and rebuilding begins • More services are restored • People may seek counselling
Recovery (years) • Major infrastructure damage may take years to repair e.g motorways, dams • Disaster plans and procedures are evaluated and revised
