  3. Speaking Biology • A startled crayfish flips its tail and abdomen underneath itself and scoots away from danger. From that easily observed behavior comes the slang expression craw fishing, backing away from a deal, promise, or obligation

  4. Think of people described as wolves, loan sharks, rats, little lambs, sheep, goats, asses • We can be sheepish, chicken, mousy, and … • Can you think of something?????

  5. Biology Defined • The science that studies the phenomenon of life. • Real Life Biology … Eat it before it eats you!

  6. Facts About Biology • 1. Living things are called organisms. The area where life exists is called the biosphere. • 2. All organisms interact with each other and their environment. • 3. There is great diversity of organisms.

  7. 4. Biology is a dynamic field because: a. It has many sub-areas (fields), each expanding as information is gathered b. It continually changes because of new technology c. Scientists strive to answer questions that cause change in how we live and see our world

  8. 5. Two types of information collected when doing research: a. basic (pure) – the gathering of information about a topic b. applied – the use of information to help mankind

Fields Related to Biology • Biochemist, zoologist, game warden, anthropologist, home economist, dietician, botanist, tree surgeon, veterinarian, gardener, nurse, curator, teacher, nurseryman, horticulturist, medical, dental, bacteriologist, immunologist, doctor, sociologist, law enforcement, etc.

  12. Chemical Level • Subatomic Particles: characteristics and behavior protons, neutrons, electrons • Atoms: characteristics and behavior nucleus, energy levels/orbits • Mixtures/Molecules/Compounds: atoms coming together to form larger things

  13. Cell Level • Organelles: tiny units that carry out particular functions • Cells: basic unit of structure and function of life • Tissues: groups of cells that perform the same function

  14. Ecological Level • Populations: a group of organisms of the same species • Communities: a group of species living in the same area • Ecosystems: groups of communities living in the same area • Biomes: vegetative ecological units • Biosphere: places on earth where life can be found

  15. Organism Level • Organs: groups of tissue that perform a life function • Systems: groups of organs that perform a life function • Organism: a unit of life
