  1. MJ2 Ch 9.6 – Theoretical & Experimental Probability

  2. Bellwork • An orchestra has one opening for a violinist, one opening for a cellist, and one opening for an oboist. Three musicians are trying out for the violin, five for the cello, and three for the oboe. Find the number of ways the openings can be filled

  3. Assignment Review • Practice skills workbook lesson 9.3

  4. Before we begin… • Please take out your notebook and get ready to work… • Continuing with the theme of probability…today we will look at the difference between theoretical and experimental probability… • Raise you hand if you can tell what the difference is between the two…

  5. Objective • Students will find and compare theoretical and experimental probabilities.

  6. Experimental Probability • Experimental Probability is based upon repetitions in an actual experiment. Example: You spin the spinner 10 times and get the number 4 twice…the experimental probability of getting a 4 is 2/10 or 1/5

  7. Theoretical Probability • Theoretical Probability is the expected probability of an event occurring. Example: The theoretical probability of spinning a four on the number spinner is 1/10

  8. Activity • Today you will work with a partner on an activity. • During the activity it is expected that you are on task an working the entire time. • If you cannot control yourself you will be sent to a time out with an alternative assignment (Text p. 395 – 396 # 1 – 29) • Please do not put me in that position!

  9. Activity • You will work with your partner to complete the math lab. • Please read all instructions before you begin… • The math lab counts as a test grade and is due at the end of the class.

  10. After the Activity • Raise your hand if you liked this activity…Why? • Raise your hand if you did not like this activity…Why? • My comments…

  11. Assignment • Text p. 395 # 6 – 13 Reminder: • This assignment is due tomorrow • I do not accept late assignments • I do not accept answers only for any assignment. (no work = no credit)
