MJ2 Ch 2.5 – Stem & Leaf Plots Quiz #3
Bellwork • Please take out your homework from yesterday and leave it on your desk for me to check • Order from least to greatest, then calculate Mean, Median & Mode (Round to nearest 10th) • 14, 5, 16, 7, 4, 15, 9, 7, 2, 14, 6 • 29, 14, 80, 59, 78, 30, 59, 69, 55, 50
Objective • Students will demonstrate their understanding of concepts covered in Ch 2.3 & 2.4 • Students will construct and interpret stem & leaf plots
Before we begin… • Today you will take a quiz… • The quiz is 5 questions worth 20 points each…this quiz will not take all period! • You may write on the quiz form • You must have a heading and use pencil (1 letter grade deduction each) • You may use a calculator if you have one • Please clear your desk…
Quiz • Ch 2 Resource book p. 121
Quiz Answers • $110.00 • $60.00 • 50 – 100; Between 20 & 50, 100 & 130; 20 and 30 • Mean 70.8, Median 70, Mode 60 • Mean and Median, more than half of the points are more than 60
After the quiz… • Please pass your quiz papers forward… • Please take out your notebook and get ready to work… • Continuing with our theme of organizing and interpreting data…today we will look at stem & leaf plots…
Objective • Students will construct and interpret stem and leaf plots
Stem & Leaf Plots • Another useful way to organize data is a stem and leaf plot. • In a stem and leaf plot the data is organized from least to greatest • The one’s place value is always the leaf • All other place values are the stem • All stem & leaf plots must have a key! • Lets look at some examples…
Identifying the Stems & Leaves 15 Stem Leaf 125 Stem Leaf 1227 Stem Leaf
Constructing a Stem & Leaf Plot Data: 26,27,23,23,24,26,31,45,33,32,41,40,21,20 Demonstrate on board
Caution • There should be at least 1 leaf for the first & last stem. There may be gaps in the data – where some stems have no leaves. Do not leave out these stems! • Data that does not have a digit in the 10’s place have a stem of 0 • The key shows how the digits are related. Example 2/1 = 21
Analyzing the Data • The stem & leaf plot allows you to describe the data. For example in our board example • Raise your hand if you can identify • The least value of the data • The greatest value of the data • Any outliers • Any gaps in the data • The stem & leaf plot also allows you to quickly identify measures of central tendency • Raise your hand if you can: • Identify the Range • Identify the mode • Identify the median
Your Turn • In the notes section of your notebook copy the table and create a stem & leaf plot of the data. • Don’t forget to put a key!
Summary • In the notes section of your notebook summarize the key concepts covered in today’s lesson • Today we discussed: • Creating Stem & leaf Plots
Assignment • Workbook Lesson 2.5 Practice Skills Reminder: • I do not accept late assignments • This assignment is due tomorrow • If you don’t finish the assignment in class you are to do it for homework!
