A way to give back to the community during the Holiday season
James Joseph Brown Jr. also known as the Godfather of Soul, first came to national attention in the 1950’s and spanned over forty years in the music business with notability on the music Bill Board, Rockin Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame.
His musical hits Living in America, from the Popular Rocky films, A Man’s World and others has topped the charts and has been portrayed in movies, film and television as he has performed them all over the world.
For the last twenty years, this Augusta Georgia native has set a tradition in his hometown of Augusta Georgia to start off the holiday season with a Turkey giveaway and his annual James Brown Toy giveaway.
Through the James Brown Foundation, these charitable events has become a tradition in Augusta, and the community looks forward in taking part of such a wonderful cause. James Brown started this organization as a way to give back to the people that are less fortunate during the holiday season.
Every Monday of each Thanksgiving week and a few weeks before Christmas the community is overwhelmed with kindness, charity expectations and musical events. A number as high as 1200 turkeys per event has been given away to the less fortunate and thousands of toys given away to under privileged children of a two state area.
Even after his death Christmas Day of 2006, the Brown’s children are carrying on the tradition. His daughter Deanna Brown, now president of the Brown Family Children foundations has worked relentlessly to keep her father’s tradition alive.
This year families formed a line at 6:30 am at Dyess Park in Augusta Georgia where the giveaway was held, five hundred people registered for turkeys. The giveaway was from 10am-1pm. appropriately located on James Brown Blvd.
James Brown legacy continues as his organization helps improvised families and needy children, but there are also other programs for music education and to assist families in need after disasters.
These James Brown organizations, has also expanded to New York City in Harlem and considering the recent events in New York because of Super Storm Sandy this has been a much needed organization.
