The SLC: Background • To meet needs for additional classroom space • The Libraries needed additional space for seating • The Electronic Teaching Library of the SLC—aimed at undergraduates
The Building • 26 classrooms • 96 group study rooms • 2000 data drops • Pervasive wireless environment • Classroom seating for 2200 • Study space for an additional 2200 • Coffee shop • No restrictions on food and drink
Building Usage Statistics • Building use peaks from 1 to 3 pm and 9 to 11 pm. • Hourly usage ranges from 700 to over 1,000 patrons in the Library.
Group Study Room 96 Group Study Rooms, seating from 6 -10. Equipped with a whiteboard, dry-erase markers, electrical outlets, and a data drop.
And the Partners Are… • The University Libraries • EITS (Enterprise Information Technology Services • OISD (Office of Instructional Support and Development)
The Partnership • The Libraries administer the building and are responsible for building maintenance and other activities: • Library services • Vendor concerns, copiers • EITS (Enterprise Information Technology Services) • Two full-time site supervisors • Over 30 student consultants • 500 workstations
The Partnership, continued • OISD (Office of Instructional Support and Development) • Provides classroom support to 26 classrooms • Full-time staff, located in the building • Provides additional technological needs, such as overhead projectors, slide projectors, portable videoconferencing equipment • One phone call away
The Electronic Teaching Library • 30,000 e-books • 30,000 e-journals • GIL and GALILEO • Full-time staff of Reference Librarians • Instruction
The E-Library • The SLC Library supports enough quality electronic materials for undergraduates to write a paper without having to leave their seats
Reference Desk at the SLC • Four reference/info desks • 3 Desks staffed by student consultants and 1 desk staffed by both a librarian and student consultants • Student Consultants managed by EITS. Administratively separate from the Libraries.
Survey Says … • Spring 2004 online and paper survey of nearly 1000 users of the SLC • 2 focus groups conducted with undergrad and graduate students • Asked what they use in the SLC
Class Rank of Respondents • Class rank was reported for 973 of the visits: • 20% freshmen • 20% sophomores • 28% juniors • 24% seniors • 7% graduate students • 1% faculty, staff, and visitors.
Survey Resultsselected statistics Note: Will not total 100% as respondents could choose multiple sources
Library Resource Use GALILEO • Slight increase in SLC from Fall 2003 to Spring 2004 • Still very low compared to Main and Science Libraries • Statistics count number of times someone accessed GALILEO from the SLC versus Main/Science Libraries
Library Resource Use • GIL -- The stats count GIL “requests” from users in the UGA Libraries. Requests include: • each search, each click to look at a record, each request to view a patron record, etc. • TOTAL REQUESTS • Fall 2003 • SLC 85,044 • Main & Science 1,194,447 • Spring 2004 • SLC 91,207 • Main & Science 1,020,682
Focus Group Results • Focus groups – consisted of 2 groups of 7-8 grads and undergrads • Know there are librarians in the SLC but not where • Understood that electronic resources were available but still visited the Main and Science libraries for print • Use the SLC as a study space and to work on group projects • One student referred to librarians as “research technicians” • Thought of librarians as being helpful and “would prefer to ask a librarian” for assistance to save time • Said the SLC become an essential part of their academic lives: “I realized after it opened that it was absolutely necessary.”
Reference @ the SLC(2004-2005 Academic Year) • Total Questions Asked: • Main Library: 36,631 • Science Library: 15,096 • SLC: 21,401 • Reference Questions Asked: • Main Library: 20,620 (56%) • Science Library: 8,164 (54%) • SLC: 1,300 (6%)
How Has Reference Changed? • New skills • Broadening our technology skills • Working collaboratively • Closer to faculty • Opportunities to teach in a technologically advanced environment • Loss of “traditional” skills? • Very little print • Lack of demand for reference work
New Techniques • “Retail Style” Reference • Chat Reference • In-depth Reference • Collaboration with teaching faculty in the SLC • Encourage addition of research assignments • Participate with OISD in Faculty Orientations and Forums • Tours/Orientations/Indoctrinations • Becoming more involved in the first year experience to relay the message that the SLC is a library from the start
BI Stats • IN FY 2003-2004 • SLC Librarians did 48% of all instruction for the Main, Science and SLC Libraries • SLC Librarians saw over 5300 students in instruction sessions • 5300 includes over 500 “others”—visitors who are not part of UGA, including visiting clubs and high school students who have research sessions
Instruction • The Libraries maintain three Information Literacy Labs • All labs have workstations, with the same software as the public workstations, sometimes even more…. • The labs have the same technologies as the classrooms • The labs seat 16, 24, and 38
Instruction, continued • Librarians collaborate with faculty for more in-depth instruction • Team taught with Academic Enhancement a for-credit course in Information Literacy • Work with instructors in the Freshmen Summer College Experience to provide hands-on sessions for various classes. • Stress web evaluation and critical thinking skills • Work, along with colleagues in the Main Library, with various departments for multi-part BI sessions
EITS • Maintains 500 workstations • Responsible for software upgrades • Trains and supervises 30 student consultants • Consultants work with Reference Librarians to provide both technical assistance and research assistance at the same service point
The Classrooms: OISD • 26 classrooms • Seating ranges from 24 to 300 • All feature the same technology • Laptop • DVD player • VCR • Internet connections
The Classrooms, continued • Additional technology • Cable-TV hook up • Auxiliary hook ups for additional laptop connections • Opaque projector • One-touch control panel to control the lights, blinds, projector, screens • Control panel allows switching between input sources, i.e., laptop, DVD player, etc.
