What is Job Shadowing? • An opportunity for a student to observe someone working in a field directly related to his/her career objective • A 4-8 hour experience
Why Should I Participate • Gain a real appreciation for the tasks required on the job • Make important business contacts • Learn about specific educational requirements needed to enter the field • Gain interview and application experience
How Do You Qualify? • Write a Cover Letter • Complete the Job Shadowing Application Form • Complete the Job Shadowing Survey of Choices • Participate in the Job Shadowing Interview
Qualifications Continued • You must be able to provide transportation to the workplace on the day of the observation. • You must submit the required field trip forms to Mrs. Fisher prior to the observation date.
What Happens at the Interview? • You meet with Miss Grana, the overall coordinator, who will complete an intake form that records your preferences regarding occupations you wish to observe • You meet with 1 or 2 coordinators from area schools who will interview you for approximately 10-15 minutes regarding your education, goals, etc
At the Interview • The interviewers spend 3-5 minutes giving feedback on your cover letter, application, and interview performance • You receive copies of the interviewers written evaluations
After the Interview • Miss Grana will contact employers who have agreed to take students interested in your career field • Miss Grana will forward your appointment time to me and I will meet with you to verify the appointment
At the Job Site • You will observe the host at the job site for the specified time period • You will ask your host 9 specific questions regarding his/her career field and place of employment
After the Observation • You will submit a written report which includes the answers to the 9 questions and your response to the 2 student questions • You will write a thank you letter to the employer expressing your gratitude for the opportunity
If Transportation is an Issue • You may choose to participate in the interview and not the observation. • This will give you a chance to gain feedback on your interviewing skills. • This will enable you to participate in Job Shadowing at a later time if transportation becomes available to you.
