Conclusions Should. . . Summarize your speech Provide closure Make a great final impression
The Last Few Lines are the Most Important Make them memorable! Go for an emotional connection. Make the audience laugh, think or stand up and applaud.
Things to Avoid Avoid rambling Avoid adding new points at the end Avoid saying you forgot something Avoid saying “the end” or “I’m done” or “That’s it”
Write it Out! • Helps to combat stage fright • The end is the second most jittery time for speakers • You won’t forget it • It’s insurance against rambling
Simple Formula “I have one final thought . . .” “If you remember one thing I’ve said today, remember this. . .”
Ways to End a Speech • Refer back to the opening • If you asked a question in the introduction, answer it now. • If you told a story in the introduction, refer to it again. • Use a quotation • Just make sure it relates to your topic • Ask a question that makes your audience think.
Ways to end continued Tell the audience what you want them to do. Make a reference to a well-known movie, book or song. End with a joke or funny remark, but make sure it’s really funny and it fits the topic.
