Fad Diets The Grapefruit Diet Aka Hollywood Diet, Mayo Clinic Diet By Danny Choi
What is it? • Traced back as far as the 1930s • Also known as the Hollywood Diet • It was featured in the 1933 film “Hard to Handle”. Grapefruit farmer Lefty Merril begins diet craze calling it “The 18 Day Grapefruit Diet”
What is it cont’d • The diet returned numerous times after the 30s • Had a big outbreak of popularity in the 70s when it was known as the Mayo Clinic Diet even though it had nothing to do with the actual Mayo Clinic • This version said you could lose up to 3 stones (about 42 pounds or 19kg) in 12 weeks
What is it cont’d • Today it is generally said you lose 10 pounds (4.5kg) in 10 days • Other versions say you do the diet for 10-12 days and rest 2 days and then repeat the cycle again.
How is it done? • There are numerous variations of the diet • Most involve having half a grapefruit or a glass of grapefruit juice before a meal • Most versions consist of cutting back on sugars and carbohydrates
How is it done cont’d Dieters are to avoid certain foods and encouraged to eat others.
How is it done cont’d • Dieters are to eat lots of foods that are high in protein, fat, or cholesterol. i.e. meat, eggs, etc • Most versions of the diet requires cutting down calorie intake to 800 calper day. • Dieters are to fast between meals, eat until fully satisfied during meals, and avoid exercise due to the low-calorie intake.
How is it done cont’d The basic menu plan is the same for each day of the week: • Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit, 2 slices of bacon, 2 boiled eggs, black coffee (no sugar) or unsweetened tea. • Lunch: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 cup of salad with low-calorie dressing, 8 ounces of lean chicken or water-packed tuna fish, black coffee (no sugar) or unsweetened tea. • Dinner: 1/2 grapefruit ,as much salad with low-calorie dressing as desired, 8 ounces of lean chicken, lean beef, or fish, black coffee (no sugar) or unsweetened tea. • No snacks are allowed, and the only seasonings permitted for the meat or fish are herbs; no soy sauce, mustard, ketchup, or other condiments are allowed. * From http://www.diet.com/g/grapefruit-diet
Does it Work? • Unfortunately, like many other fad diets, this diet is not a good one according to scientists • It is unhealthy to cut certain nutrients from you diet • Like mentioned before, this diet requires only 800 cal per day to be consumed. Most teenagers and adults need around 2000-2500 cal per day. • This lack of energy may indeed help lose weight but it is temporary and unhealthy
Does it Work cont’d • A hint of truth can be found in this diet • Grapefruits are very healthy fruits that contain lots of Vitamin C. • However, grapefruits don’t possess the magical powers of breaking down fat. • Eating any other citrus fruit would produce the same results as the grapefruit
Does it Work cont’d • Another thing is that eating half of a fruit before a meal will let you eat less and feel more satisfied due to the extra water • This could result in less nutrients and fat • Weight loss may occur but it will most likely be temporary • Losing 10 pounds in 10 days will result in gaining it all back in the same amount of time if not faster
Health • Grapefruit is very healthy so there is no problem in eating half a grapefruit before a meal • The problems occur when only 800 calories are eaten • Vitamin C in grapefruit will help health conditions and blood pressure
Health cont’d • Plant chemicals called phytochemicals which are in grapefruit are very healthy and reduce risk of contracting chronic diseases. • The diet will not help dieters lose weight in a healthy way, therefore it is not recommended for the purposes of dieting. You should always have the proper amount of calories in your diets and exercise should be involved
Science • A 12 week study led by Dr. Ken Fujioka found that there was weight loss in most patients because chemicals in grapefruit reduce insulin levels to encourage weight loss • Maria Adams, MS, MPH, RD, writes that a small lab did prove some weight loss but the original diet methods are unhealthy and not recommended
