Why are people so important in Grizzly Bear conservation?A case for interdisciplinary problem solving Presentation by: Felicity Edwards, The CSE Group Mike Gibeau, Parks Canada
Outline of the paper • Context for interdisciplinary problem solving and Grizzly Bear management in Banff National Park • What is interdisciplinary framework for problem solving? • Why is it important? • What to listen for in the case studies?
What is Interdisciplinary Framework for Problem Solving? • Policy Sciences are problem oriented: What are the tasks of problem solving? • 1. Goals? (values & indices) • 2. What happened? (trends) • 3. Why? (conditions) • 4. Future? (projections) • 5. Problem definition? • 6. What to do? (alternatives) Repeat as needed
Why is are values underlying a multi-disciplinary framework useful? • Power • Knowledge • Respect • Skill • Wealth • Well-being • Affection • Rectitude (Lasswell 1971)
Why is an interdisciplinary framework important? • It helps us be more: • Reasonable • Practical • Justified • Clear about our own standpoint • Integrative in making judgments.
A guide to the case studies • Grizzly Bear issues are multiple-faceted and complex. • Facts may be contradictory or not believed by some until they are “our” facts. • We can often get the science right (ish) AND still not get a good decision. • Create a forum for dialogue in the face of no prior negotiating. • Search for an integrative decision – not compromise.
