Unbalanced Forces and Motion Fifth Grade Science
Balanced Forces- equal forces in opposite directions Have a net force of zero
Unbalanced Forces- cause motion or change in the direction in which the object is moving Have a net force that is not zero
Tug Of War • When there are equal forces on both sides of the rope: • The rope does not move • There is a net force of zero • The forces on the rope are balanced
Tug of War • If one person starts to pull harder: • The net force will no longer be zero • The net force will be in the direction of the larger force • The forces on the rope are unbalanced • The rope and the people move in the direction of the larger force
Unbalanced forces The net force = the larger force – opposite force
