  2. 1. Because Stalin didn’t like it • Nineteen Eighty-Four, By George Orwell was banned in 1950 by Stalin because he thought it was a future view of his country. • The ban was not lifted until 1990, and the book was only reprinted after editing

  3. 2. Because Explosions are Fun • Fight Club, By Chuck Palahniuk has been banned in China since 1999 • The Chinese government did not like that the book explained how to make explosives

Because Catholics are Easily Offended • The Golden Compass, by Phillip Pullman • Kellenberg Memorial, a United States Catholic High school pulled the book from its library shelves because it negatively portrayed the Catholic Church (and all organized religion) • The book’s view was not deemed offensive until the movie was released in 2007. The books sequels remain on the shelf

  5. 4. For Treating People Nicely • Uncle Tom’s Cabin, By Harriet Beecher Stowe • Was banned in the Southern United States for abolitionist content • Was also banned in Tsarist Russia because of parallels to treatment of Russian serfs

  6. 5. Because Animals are not Humans! • Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carrol • Was banned in the province of Hunan, China in 1931 for the portrayal of anthropomorphized animals acting on the same level as humans
