Cambridge Bay Information • Located on the south coast of Victoria Island • Central hub for the Kitikmeot region and gateway to other destinations • Daily flights to/from Yellowknife and Edmonton • More than 110 registered businesses (represents a 10% increase from 2010) • Primary Employers: Hamlet of Cambridge Bay, Government of Nunavut, Inuit Organizations and Private Businesses (mining, construction, transportation etc.)

  3. Cambridge Bay Information (cont.) • Population: 1608 (2011 Stats Canada) Population increased 12.8% between 2001 and 2006 and 8.9% between 2006 and 2011

Development in Cambridge Bay • GN and Federal Government announced $28 million infrastructureinvestment in Cam Bay • $16 million investment in airport improvements • $12 million investment in a new water treatment plant, intake pump house and waterline upgrades • KIA Head Office • Nunavut Arctic College campus • New Municipal Office: construction in 2013 • Canadian High Arctic Research Station: currently in design phase, will begin construction 2014/15

Advantages of Doing Business in Cambridge Bay • High speed internet and mobile phone access • Hotel Accommodations: 66 rooms, 104 guests • Education and Training: Daycare with preschool programing, elementary school, high school and Nunavut Arctic College Campus • Key Territorial Organizations Including: GN, NIRB, NTI, NPC, KIA, NRC etc. • Established Business Community: construction, outfitting, logistics, retail etc.

Advantages of Doing Business in Cambridge Bay (cont.) • Ready labour force & heavy equipment on site • Unemployment rate of 9.7% (well below Nunavut’s average of 15.6%) • Recreation facilities: weight room/gym, ice rink, curling rink, baseball diamonds, golf course, indoor swimming pool, indoor and outdoor basketball courts and Territorial Park

Kitikmeot Opportunities in Mining • Despite recent setbacks, mining prospects in the Kitikmeot region remain promising • 8 mining projects could be operational in the Kitikmeot region in the next 10 years • Elgin – Ulu/Lupin (gold) • MMG - IZOK/High Lake (copper, zinc, gold, silver) • Newmont – Hope Bay (gold) • Sabina – Back River (gold) • Shear - Jericho (diamonds) • Xstrata – Hackett River (base metals)

Kitikmeot Opportunities in Mining (cont.) • All projects are in various stages of exploration, permitting. • If they were all to progress as scheduled, it could lead to: • Construction of 2 new ports • Construction of 400 - 600 kilometers of all-weather roads • $500 - $600 million investment in business opportunities • 1500 employment opportunities

  10. The Role of the EDO • All Nunavut communities have access to an EDO  • The EDO can/should be the first point of contact • EDO’s are a resource for the Hamlet, residents and business community

The Role of an EDO (cont.) • What an EDO can do for Businesses: • Assist with business start-up • Help identify new markets and explore business expansion opportunities • Complete funding applications and business proposals • Prepare business plans or obtain funding for business plan development

The Role of an EDO (cont.) • What an EDO can do for Mining Companies: • Arrange community consultations or council meetings • Provide information on the business community, development proficiencies and workforce statistics • Develop project proposals • Provide information on Hamlet initiatives that may be of interest • EDO’s can help fill gaps in the community and throughout the region
