A Public and Private Partnership to help residents save money by safely using energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps. Hazardous Materials Awareness WeekJanuary 18-24, 2009 Compact Fluorescent Lamp Safety/Collection Program The North Central Florida Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) has a responsibilityto help increase chemical safety in our communities. The LEPC, County Emergency Management and local businesses are partnering to ensure that residents can save money and energy by safely using efficient compact fluorescent lamps that contain a very small amount of potentially hazardous mercury. LEPC Chairman Ron Mills says, “It is important that Florida residents know how we can safely clean-up a broken compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) in our own homes. A hazardous materials response team does not need to be called if a bulb is broken.” Governor Charlie Crist has declared Hazardous Materials Awareness Week statewide. The Florida Division of Emergency Management is also a partner in Florida’s 2009 Hazardous Materials Awareness Week. If a CFL or other fluorescent lamp should break in your home, instructions on how to safely perform a clean-up are available at CFL Collection locations and on the LEPC web site. For example, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection recommends to not use a broom or a vacuum to clean up a mercury spill.
