  1. Where do we find DNA?Refer to 7-2 Q 21 / 25 • Nucleus • Mitochondria • Chloroplasts

  2. Elodea Lab Follow-Up and Unit Review Information

  3. Follow up to Lab#3 • Plastids – • A double membrane bound organelle involved in the synthesis and storage of food, and is commonly found within the cells of photosynthetic organisms, like plants • Chromoplasts – • Are plastids responsible for pigment synthesis and storage • An organelle containing any plant pigment other than chlorophyll. The pigments may be yellow, orange, or red.

  4. Lab 8a / 8b • Plasmolysis • Shrinkage or contraction of the protoplasm away from the wall of a living plant or bacterial cell, caused by loss of water through osmosis • http://www.pgjr.alpine.k12.ut.us/science/whitaker/Cell_Chemistry/Plasmolysis.html • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWkcFU-hHUk&feature=related • Cytolysis • The dissolution or destruction of a cell • A cell bursts due to an osmotic imbalance; excess water moves into the cell • Basically water goes into the cell and increases the volume; if the volume increases to a point that exceeds the cells capacity, the cell bursts. • In plants, it shouldn’t happen due to the cell wall • In mammals – one result of a stroke

  5. Elodea - Osmosis

  6. Lab #3 Elodea – Hypertonic Solution Elodea – Hypertonic Cells in a Hypotonic Solution

  7. Elodea • Fresh (Normal) Solution • Hypertonic Solution • Hypertonic cells in a hypotonic solution • http://www.linkpublishing.com/video-transport.htm#Elodea_-_Osmosis

  8. Unit Test – What to Study • For success, students should review all material covered following the Safety unit. This includes the following sections and all related handouts: • Chapter 1 • Biological Drawings (including calculations) • Chapter 7-1 • Chapter 7-2 • Chapter 7-3 • Labs - • Biological Drawings, Microscope and Elodea

  9. Review for Unit Test • P. 173: 1, 2, 4 • P. 181: 1-4 • P. 189: 1-5 • P. 199: 1-7 • P. 197: 1-8, 10-19, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 33, 34
