Definitions • Bully – adjective. fine; excellent; very good. [www.dictionary.com] • Bullying - a student or group of students engages in written or verbal expression or physical conduct that: • Will have the effect of physically harming a student, damaging a student’s property, or placing a student in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s person or of damage to the student’s property; or • Is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that the action or threat creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for a student. Bullying is Everywhere • In the media. • The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights issued a “Dear Colleague” letter about bullying on October 26, 2010. • The Texas Legislature is poised to do more.
What Should You Do? • Know you policies. • TASB Policies FB, FFH, FFI, FFF, and FG • Train your personnel. • Staff working with students must know how to recognize bullying. • Develop a reporting procedure. • Designate staff responsible for taking/receiving reports and investigating.
Keep Doing Something… • Advertise policies and methods of reporting. • Staff, Students AND Parents. • Educate students on prohibited conduct. • Document complaints.
You’re Not Done… • Investigate. • Prompt, thorough and impartial. • End, eliminate and prevent bullying and harassment. • Take steps toward that goal. • Prohibit retaliation.
And Finally… • Follow up. • Continue to evaluate policies. • Keep track of new laws. • Modify policies accordingly.
