Major Challenges • Reduce Amazon risk due to global climate change • Minimize impact of land use (LU) and climate change on human health • Minimize impact of LU on Amazon biodiversity • Economic globalization opportunities for sustainable development
The Overall Goal Reduce global and local environmental threats through the development of sustainable land use (LU) systems
Specific Goals • Intensify LU to minimize enrivonmental impacts and improve small holder income • Reduce negative effects of LU on human health • Conserve and use plant genetic resources • Rehabilitate degraded pastures • Reduce C emission and economic losses due to fire management • Minimize negative impacts of large-scale commercial agriculture • Increase national R&D institutional capacity
Priority Themes - Policy - Climate Change - Genetic Resources - Forestry - Land Use and Human Health - Pasture Rehabilitation - Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn
Integration with other initiatives South-American component of ASB, focused in the Amazon region- to be discussed during the steering committee meeting Challenge Programs (Rainforest, Climatic Change) Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia, LBA (Human dimension perspective, joint proposals)
