COMENIUS VISIT TO DUBROVNIK. We headed from Ploče at 7:30. We were all sleepy but the mood on the bus was great. Our first stop: Bay of Mali Ston .

Our first stop: Bay of Mali Ston Due to favourablegeologicalcharacteristics in the bay, musselsand oysters have been cultivated in the Bay of Mali Ston from ancient times. The bay is 28m deep, rather narrow and shallow.
Our first stop: Bay of Mali Ston It is the oldest knownmusselfarm in the Mediterranean sea and the most important place for the cultivation of shellfish in Croatia.
Visiting the shellfish farm The kind workers of the seashell company took us all on a special boat, to see the boxes with fish and the ropes with seashells. The mixture of fresh water from the Neretva river, and many underground water springs make this an ideal place for the growth of sea shells.
We saw a golden bass and an albino sea bass, which are grown on the farm.
The oysters are cleaned on the boat and transported to the warehouse for packing and transport.

Our second stop: Dubrovnik viewpoint Beforeentering the City, we went to the viewpoint. We were all amazed by the sight. Everybody took some pictures.
Dubrovnik walls The town walls werebuilt from13 to 17 century for defensepurposes. They are1940 m longand protected by towers. About 2000inhabitants lived withinthe city walls , in the time of Republic of Dubrovnik.Due to the constant threat by the Venetians,each entrancefacing theport was closed.
Alldoors are open for friendstoday We were invited to the County Office and hosted by the DeputyPrefect . He was impressed by the range of interesting activities and visits the Enthusiastic Team did during the first project meeting.
Visit to the County Office The teams from Turkey, the United Kingdom, Slovakiaand Poland presented their topics in this project.
Tour of Dubrovnik old city We started our tour in the old harbour, which the guide showed us together with the shipyard.
From there we saw Lazareti, the firstquarantinecenterbuilt in 1627. The visitors coming from far, possibly infected areas, had to stay there for 4 weeks, to isolate the illnessand prevent the plaguefrom entering the city. That precaution made Dubrovnik known as a safe market centre,and helped the trade.
Tour of Dubrovnik old city The guide showed us the main street of Dubrovnik called Stradun. He explained that Dubrovnik has got the oldest sewerage system across Europe. The excitingthing in the openairmuseum is that you walk over the exhibits, you enter them, you climb on them..
The Rector’s Palace Thepalace was the headquarters of Republic of Dubrovnik between the 14th century and 1808.Rectorsruled for 1 montheach, and stayed in the Palacewithout their familiesduring their entirerule.
Široka Široka street is wider than other streets in the old city because it used to be the path to the granary. The granary(a place for storing and distribution of the grain) was important, and people needed quickaccess to it. In the medieval times, the supply of grain was as important as the supply of weapons for the siege or for the scarce years.
The Friars Minor pharmacyopened in 1317in the Franciscanmonastery at Stradun , is the oldest pharmacy in Europe working at the same place for centuries.Theoriginal objects, like stone bowls, ancient lab equipment, ceramics and medical books,areon display in themonastery museum .
Onofrio’s Fountain GreatOnofrio's Fountain is a sixteen-sided container with a cupola.Each of the sixteen sides hada unique "maskeron”.
There used to be a dragon statue on top of this fountain, but it was destroyed in anearthquake.
Lunch We had lunch otside of city walls in a restaurant called Mimoza, to getmore energy and continue our tour of Dubrovnik.
The Lovrijenac tower was built in the 11th century. The walls facingthe sea and possible enemy fire are almost 12 meters thick. Spare time We had time to take photos with tourists, eat some ice cream and buy souvenirs.
Tour of the city walls We climbed the city walls.There was a great view from there. We took more pictures.
On the way back We boarded the bus and headed back to Ploče. The atmosphere on the bus was great. We were happy .
Visit to Ston saltern We stopped at Ston to visit the famous Ston saltern. The owner of the saltern explainedeverything about salt production . We bought some salt. We boarded the bus and continued back to Ploče.
On the way back to Ploče We had a lot of funtalkingEnglish to our friends from partner countries. It was great!
