Who invented the Snowmobile? • Joseph-Armand Bombardier was the inventor of the snowmobile. • He was from a small town called Valcourt in Quebec, Canada • He was a Canadian inventor and businessman and was the founder of Bombardier. • His most famous invention was the snowmobile. Born: April 16, 1907 Died: Feb 18, 1964

  3. Why it is called Ski-doo? • The Ski-Doo was originally intended to be named the "Ski-Dog" because Bombardier meant it to be a practical vehicle to replace the dogsled for hunters and trappers.   4. The First Snowmobile • Bombardier invented a large enclosed, seven passenger snowmobile in 1937 called the B-7 and introduced another enclosed twelve passenger model the B-12 in 1942. Google images

  6. Why was it invented? • A snowmobile also known as snow machine or sled is a land vehicle designed for the winter travel on snow. It can be used for easy travel for frozen lakes, or driven on paths and trails. It can usually hold two people . • Originally the snowmobile was used where motor vehicles were unable to go but now they are used mostly for recreational purposes.

Edgar Hetteen • Edgar Hetten was born in 1920 in Roseau, Minnesota • Edgar Hetteen started Polaris and Arctic Cat and improved the capabilities of the snowmobile. • He started his company called Hetteen, Hoist and Derrick in 1944 and changed the name to Polaris Industries in the mid 1950’s. • The snowmobile that was invented by his company was called the Snow Traveler • He then started Arctic Cat Enterprises in Thief River Falls, Minnesota in 1961.   9. Lowell Swenson • Lowell Swenson was the President of Arctic Cat Enterprises • He died on October 16, 2007 in Bemidji, Minnesota. • He bought Arctic Cat Enterprises in 1965 and sold the company in 1978.

  11. Arctic Cat Today • The 50th Anniversary of Arctic Cat was April 28, 2011. • There is a large improvement from the first Arctic Cat to the variety of snowmobiles available today!

  12. History of Polaris • In 1964 Polaris released the Comet. However it was recalled and the new mode the Mustang in 1965 was created and they continued in the 1960’s and 1970’s. • In the Early 1980’s an Indy style had a wider stance and continued in the 90’s with the Storm, Ultra, and Trail lines. • In 1990’s Polaris introduced the Rocky Mountain King (RMK) and the Polaris Rush • Now there is a wide variety of snowmobiles that keep improving with new technology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polaris_Industries

This was the first snowmobile with slide valve carburetors. • 1971 the SR433 high performance snowmobile was introduced. • 1976 the legendary SRX440 snowmobile was the forefront of the snowmobile racing scene. • In 1984 the Phazer snowmobile was introduced. • In 1992 the Vmax-4 with 2 stroke and four cylinder was introduced. • In 2003 the RX-1 Snowmobile was the world’s first high performance 4 stroke snowmobile.

  15. How have they improved over time. • Since the snowmobile has been invented they have created snowmobiles to have more power and have different styles for different uses. With the advancements in technology we are now able to find many different brand names and many different types to fit the needs of the recreational uses.

  16. What they look like now! • Snowmobiles of every brand name that have been described are continuously changing. Most snowmobiles are now come in many different types and they can be loud, used for mountains, or driving through trails. There are many options that can be added or changed to enhance to what style is best for you!
