York to Jorvik HISTORY In 866, a Viking army assembled just north to the English city of York. York was the prize of the Kingdom , being a grand city of trade, religion, culture, and wealth. The massive Viking army attacked and over whelmed the city. After throwing out the duke, the Viking King renamed the city Jorvik. Jorvik became the most prosperous city under Viking control. Why York? First off, because of its direct connection to the ocean, York had the potential to bea vital trade point. Also, York was a well established political, and religious society, and still retained its original Roman built defensive walls, that would allow the Vikings to defend the city with minimal troops.
Jorvik Under Viking control, Jorvik thrived. It became one of the most prosperous cities in Britain, and its population increased by more then 5 times, growing from less then 2,000 before the Vikings, to over 10,000 at the time the Vikings were expelled. Jorvik had been very built up during the Viking period, and expanded considerably. Private properties within the city were divided by small fences, much like today.

However, due to the findings and studies of archeologists, there is a part of the city where you can go and see how things used to be, and how people lived in the city of Jorvik. This site has done a great deal in healping historians understand more and more about what life was like in the age of the Vikings. Eventually, the Viking city of Jorvik fell to King Alfred the Great of Wessex. Alfred renamed the city York, and took over all its trade and proceeds.
