Matter and Motion • All matters in the universe is constantly in motion. • Motion is when an object changes position. Example : A race car is in motion because it changes position.
Changing Position • In order to see if something has changed position you need a reference point. Example: the starting and finishing line of a racetrack. • Distance is how far an object moved. • Displacement is how far something has moved and the direction it moved. Suppose someone ran north to the 50m mark and then turns around and runs back south 30m.the total is 80m.
Speed • Speed is the distance traveled divided by the time taken distance. Speed can be calculated by the equation: Speed (in meters/seconds) Distance (in meters) time (in seconds) Example: Suppose someone ran 2km in 10min. What is the rate? • The speed at a given point and time is the instantaneous speed. • -Speedometers shows how fast a car is • going at point and time or at one instant.
Graphing Motion • You can represent the motion of an object with a distance time graph. • The time plotted on the horizontal axis and the distance is plotted on the vertical axis.
Velocity • The velocity of an object is the speed of the object and the direction of its motion. • The velocity of an object can change if the object’s speed changes ,its direction of motion changes ,or they both change. • If a car is going around a racetrack its speed may be constant, but its velocity is changing because it is changing direction. • Escalators have the same speed, but have • different velocities because they are going in • different directions.
