  2. Samurai warriors • Samurai , meaning those who serve, lived in the higher class in Japan. They served mainly as warriors for their lord, and sometimes even had to settle disputes and enforce laws. The title of the samurai were passed down from father to son. • They also had elevated rights, and were the only ones who could ride horses, carry swords, or even have last names. Although they were expected to be benevolent and kind, had the rights to execute a person of lower class if they felt like they did not have enough rights. • Samurai were also rejected by their lords at times when they were either not useful, or had fallen out of favor. These samurai became known as the ronin. They did not work, and were given a specific amount of money to spend. Usually, this was not very much so the ronin were generally sad.

  4. Appearance (cont.) • Unlike many other types of swords, Japanese swords, or a katana was curved. Additionally, instead of a circular guard, Kanata had a rectangular guard. Like most swords, they were very heavy and made of metal. In battle, samurai tried to look as fierce as possible, which explains the extravagant helmets.

  5. Bushido • Bushido was basically the code of conduct for samurai in Ancient Japan. The bushido was so strict that the samurai could die if he broke the code. There was even a specific way to suicide, called hara-kiri. Samurai had to be wise, noble, kind, loyal, and above all honorable.
