  1. Graphs

  2. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should

  3. A better option… and better still

  4. Steps to making a good graph • Figure out your variables • Figure out the possible range of each variable • Draw the axes as either 2 x 3 or 2 x 2 • 3-10 tick marks on the side • Label axes • Make legend marks meaningful • Add a title and legend

  5. Which looks like the bigger effect?

  6. Which is more honest?

  7. Any problems?

  8. What type of graph should you use when? • Bar graphs • Line graphs • Pie charts • 3-D graphs

  9. Characteristics of friendly, honest graphs • Spell words out (no abbreviations) • Use words running left to right (not vertically) • Make sense without looking at the text • Make lines and symbols easy to tell apart • No cross-hatching, close combinations • Avoid combinations that are hard for color blind to see • Use upper and lower case type, with a serif font • Avoid extra grid lines or other things that don’t add to the graph • Have a title that includes all the variables in the graph • Minimize ink to data ratio

  10. Any problems with this graph?
