Practice 1: Take a Disciplined Approach • Help your clients develop and use a structure that works for them • Encourage taking small steps • Have them focus their attention and energy where they have control
Practice 2: Manage Stress and Emotions • Help them develop a daily regimen of self-care, making this an integral part of their job search • Have them focus on the tasks right in front of them; teach them how to put emotions to the side • Encourage the asking for help before it is desperately needed
Practice 3: Develop Actionable Goals and Plans • Have them create A, B, and possibly C goals and spending appropriate time on each • Guide them in stepping out of their comfort zone, as necessary, to keep things moving • Help them to do all necessary research to insure that their goals and plans are inspiring, realistic, and feasible
Practice 4: Trust the Process • Help them to be disciplined and accountable for their actions • Show them how this as an opportune time to develop in new ways and learn new things • Remind them that the job search has a logic and timing of its own; it’s rarely, if ever, personal
Practice 5: Keep a Positive Attitude • Remind them that this time period is just one small part of their life story • Help them to affirm and communicate their strengths to self and others • Guide them in being mindful of their choices
Practice 6: Allow for Moments of Inspiration and Awe • Encourage the making time every day for silence, meditation, or prayer • Remind them to allow their sense of the divine to infuse the job search in appropriate ways • Help them to remember that the journey itself is as meaningful as reaching the destination
Next Steps: Get Moving, Keep Moving • Choices/decisions to be made? • Practices to put into action? • Information to gather, understand, and utilize? • Others?
Even if you are on the right track, you’ll still get run over if you just sit there. Will Rogers
