Membership NPSS , March 2 2013 Sal Portillo
Remembrances of things past and questions: • Our membership levels remain the same ~2500 members • Saw tooth is still there- we peaked at ~3200 • We recruited about 650 members • We lost about half but probably more • Question: do we have a set of core members, say 90% (??) that has been with us for more than 5 years and what is the turnover within that group? • What is the turnover with newer members (ones that have been with us for more than 2 years? Thank you Bob! • Expected answers today but Samieee says : proxy error! Proxy could not handle the request…ok maybe next week
This years Focus will be on • Establishing a membership set of core volunteers • Establish a relationship with an Asia-Pacific colleagues to help with recruitment activities in that region, specially at upcoming conferences • If we are to be successful we need to think ‘locally’ what do other regions need? • Need to look at the data with higher resolution (regions, chapters..)..Thank You Jean Luc • How can we improve on our 20 (dropped 12 so far) new members from latin America (long term).. Thank you. JP. Allain! • Subcommittee: Jean Luck, Jane, Albe, Sandra, Vern, And perhaps Zhan sen? • Vern…. • Retention.. • Increase our membership from other regions • Organic net growth..2%=50 new members a year…..(bridge too far)..ok 1%..25 new long term members a year….0.5%=12..?? Depends on our turnover..
Who we are… Feb 27-2013 About 2435 total, 130 students
New Members 2012…652 Total Active=371 Inactive=162
Sample Letter for retention.. Sample Questionnaire…Need to iterate with VP and President..
Volunteers • Thank you, I know it is hard work! • What do we need: • Members of the community with years of involvement.. Roots in the community • Outgoing/engaging • Local to the event? • Represent NPSS- Wave our flag… • Recruit • Set up day before • Must be there for All intermission and registration events • Can (should) see some of the presentations… • Small report at end of conference • Improvements • Concerns • Thank you again, I know it is hard work!
I would like to start a Membership subcommittee: • Areas of interest: • Revisit, address transition from paper forms to digital forms • Presently we have paper forms that need to be transcribed and checked and at times errors are made • How do we grow outside the US? (should we?) • How do we establish a close working relationship with our counterparts in foreign countries that can lead the recruiting efforts and be more successful at it • Improve our undergraduate and graduate recruiting AT the school location… • Is the booth the best way to recruit new members at conferences? • Should we have a general free snack get together where everyone is welcome.. specifically students…???? • Should we establish some kind of rotating internship where a a recent Ph.D can contribute to membership activities and meet people.. rotate once a year? • Free memberships viable option? • Subcommittee members: 6 members, small enough to be nimble yet not so small.. enough to get buy in: Albe Larsen, Jean Luc, Jane Lehr, Sandra Biedron??, Vern? Jennan?? (China), Sal • Meet once every two months telecom….UNM to the rescue • Work on mostly good ideas and path forward.. (Maybe some bad ideas as well!) • Conference Fees?? Get buy in from conference chair • Design a questionnaire for present members: Value of IEEE? Another one for those that did not renew?
