  2. Commitment • Assessment - all buildings on campus in 2006 • Sustainability Management Plan (SMP) - adopted by all College governance groups in 2007

Definition of Sustainability in SMP The terms “sustainability performance” and “environmental performance” incorporate the notion of continuous improvement and refer to continuous reduction of social, environmental and financial risks and impacts, over time, and continuous enhancement of social, environmental and financial opportunities over time.

  4. Action • Six Areas of Focus • Hazardous & Solid Waste Reduction & Control • Energy Conservation, Efficiency and CO2 Reduction • Water Use Reduction, Control and Reuse • Green Purchasing and Procurement Controls in the College Supply Chain • Ecologically Responsible Landscaping, Installation and Maintenance • Green Building Construction and Renovation

Education • California Community College sustainability curriculum workshops • Twenty-five Environmental Studies & Sciences Courses • Four certificate/degree programs in: • Environmental Stewardship • Biodiversity Specialist • Environmental Compliance & Pollution Prevention • Energy Management and Climate Policy

Community • Institute of Community & Civic Engagement • The American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) • Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) • Valley Transportation Authority • Morgan Family Foundation • Sustainable Design in Higher Education • Part of a statewide consortium, including Chancellor's Office of the California Community Colleges and PG&E, to promote energy savings through training and policy within the California Community College system during the last 10 years.

  7. How We Measure • Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) • Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)

What Will STARS Do? • Establish common standard of measurement for sustainability in higher education • Provide a guide for advancing sustainability in all sectors of higher education • Provide meaningful comparisons across institutions • Create incentives for continual improvement toward sustainability • Facilitate information sharing on sustainability practices and performance in higher education What is Measured? • Environmental • Social • Economic

Other Campus Measurements • Reports from Los Altos Garbage Co. on tonnage for: • Solid Waste • Recycled Wood, Metal, Cardboard & Paper • Dining Services • Tonnage of food preparation scraps converted to compost • Work with District to determine reduction of water use from: • Water Conservation methods • Low flush toilets • Sensor water faucets • Fully operational new irrigation system with weather station • Grounds • Track amount of material mulched quarterly • Track amount of green waste composted • Measure E & C • LEED® Certification for new buildings & renovations
