Principles of design What are they again? • Unity: When all elements work together to communicate ideas or feelings. • Variety: Is achieved by introducing differences in the elements of a composition. • Emphasis: When one element or a combination of elements in an artwork commands more attention than anything else. • Rhythm: Is created by repeating specific elements or by use of progression in which an element gradually changes size, shape or color.

Principles of Design Continued • Balance: Occurs when the visual weight in an artwork feels equally distributed. • Pattern: Repeating lines, shapes or other elements in a recognizable way over the surface. • Proportion: concerns size relationships between parts of an artwork. (Scale is size only).

  5. Printmaking a history • The subjects of early Japanese prints were of everyday happenings. • This type of printmaking is known as ukiyo-e or floating world. • Printmaking made art affordable to the everyday person. • Before the printmaking, art was reserved to the wealthy and powerful.

  6. Your Assignment • To create a relief print using wood. • Your final piece should demonstrate at least 2 principles of design you choose to focus on. • You will present your piece during critique along with turning in a two paragraph artist statement that discusses the principles you’ve chosen, and how your piece illustrates these principles.

  7. RubricCriteria (25points) • Student has chosen 2 principles of design that are clearly illustrated in their final composition. • Student has successfully used the reduction process to create a multicolored print. • Student has completed a satisfactory two paragraph, typed artist statement and presented it during critique.

  8. Rubric Craftsmanship (25 points) • Student’s work clearly demonstrates good craftsmanship and is clean and neat. • Student’s work clearly demonstrates careful thought process & attention to detail. • Student used class time efficiently and demonstrated that their priority was to focus on the project.

  9. Rubric Creativity (10 points) • Student’s work has characteristics that make it unique to the rest of the class. • Student’s work demonstrates attention to making the work their own within the restrictions of the assignment.

  10. Printmaking, the process • How to carve • Applying ink • These are generally the same steps you will be using once you’ve gridded & transferred your drawing to the wood. • Please pay attention to a teacher directed demo of the process. • Reduction printing
