GENERAL PRESENTATION • AshakaCem, Cement Manufacturing Company • A subsidiary of LAFARGE: 51% control shares • Located in Funakaye, Gombe State, Nigeria. • 606 Employees • Objectives of the PPP: • To plan, implement, monitor and evaluate AshakaCem HIV/AIDS Workplace Programme (WPP) • To extend the WPP into local communities
Public Private PartnershipAshaka/GTZ • Financial support: AshakaCem 55%of the total budget GTZ 45% • Technical assistance GTZ: • To finance a Technical Advisor to coordinate the planned activities in close cooperation with the Lafarge/AshakaCem • To Provide Training for Company HIV/AIDS Coordinator *
AshakaCem Progress • HIV/AIDS workplace policy document finalized • Task force committee in place • KAPB* survey: 65% employees participation, including 304 truck drivers. • May 2005: VCT training for 11 participants Employees & Communities • June 2005: 21 Peer educators’ trained *Knowledge Attitude Practice & Behaviour
AshakaCem Outcomes • Direct impact: - 93 company staff had VCT so far - 221 community members • Employees on ARV treatment - 38 Staff on treatment - The Community has been low to respond due to the cost • Active behavioral change communication, condoms, brochures… • Training Coordinator in WPP Cost Benefit Analysis & participation in a Workshop in South Africa (Oct. 05)
Public Private PartnershipAshaka/PEPFAR • GTZ technical assistance to finalize the PPP Concept Paper to PEPFAR in collaboration with AshakaCem • PEPFAR Teams visited AshakaCem in September 2005, with the GBC Medical Director: • To assess the feasibility of the PPP project and to visit medical center facilities at AshakaCem, and in the Community • PEPFAR’S financing Approval
