History of the sport • Tennis was invented by Major Walter C Wingfield of England in 1873. It was first played at a garden party in Wales. • The game was first called Sphairistikle which means in Greek; ball playing. • It used to be a men only sport until there was a woman championship held at Wimbledon.
Important Skills needed for success. • The way to hit the ball is by a serve, forehand, backhand, volley, half-volley, overhead smash, drop shot and lob. • Use good foot work. • There are many proper grips to use playing the game so use the one that is most comfortable to you. An example of a grip are eastern, continental, western and semi western.
Positions on the court. • Net: A net, standing three feet high, divides the court into two halves. The ball must be hit over the net on each shot. Baseline: The line running parallel to the net that marks the boundary on the length of the court. Sidelines: The two lines that run perpendicular to the net and mark the boundary on the width of the court. The sidelines vary for singles and doubles play. Doubles alleys: The additional area on the sides of the court used in doubles play. Service line: The line running parallel to the net that marks the end of the two service boxes. Service box: The area in which a serve must land for play to continue. Center line: The line running perpendicular to the net that divides the two service boxes. Center mark: Line dividing the service area into two halves.
Strategy Tips for tennis • Make sure that every ball you hit has a specific target. • Learn to have certain cues to help you with your strokes • When you're hitting the ball focus on fluidity and using both your upper body and your lower body. • Use practice time intelligently.
