Overview • Public Education & Outreach: Develop outreach materials for the following: - General public. - Special groups such as restaurants & auto repair. - Homes with sewage disposal systems. • Public Involvement & Participation: Development & implementation of community storm water management programs. - Build support for program implementation & funding. - Develop volunteer networks. - Help to monitor compliance.
Basic Approach • Forming partnerships with local, state, federal, nonprofits, the private sector and civic organizations. - Save money. - Avoid duplication of efforts. - Generate greater support and compliance. - Generate more credibility and acceptance. • Ensure maximum coverage by using a wide range of educational materials & strategies. - Borrow existing materials from others instead of re-inventing the wheel. - Modify any borrowed materials to specifically address audiences and issues particular to your community.
Basic Approach • Reach out to diverse audiences through all available and appropriate means. - Tailor information to target specific audiences and communities. - Use innovative outreach methods to reach audiences less likely to read standard materials. - Specifically target commercial, industrial, and institutional entities such as restaurants, auto repair shops, carpet cleaners, etc. - Sponsor speakers, public service announcements (PSAs), and community-based projects.
Creating Effective Program • Ten Tips to Creating an Effective Public Education Program: - Understand the Phase II requirements. - Determine available resources. - Generate awareness and create support from all stakeholders, particularly elected officials and other internal staff. - Know the targeted audience and determine the appropriate outreach mechanism. - Tailor messages and materials specifically for the targeted audience.
