  2. Battle of Stalingrad • Germans running out of oil, so Hitler changed his tactics to 1. get oil & 2. capture Stalingrad • Marched to Stalingrad conquering house by house • Soviet launched a massive counterattack • Hitler refused to quit • Winter turned Stalingrad into a frozen wasteland

Battle of Midway • Nimitz intercepted messages that Japan was heading to Midway. • From there planned on heading toward Hawaii to finish the job. • We were outnumbered four to one in ships and planes. • We prepared a surprise reception. • Sent out search planes to inflict maximum damage on the enemy

D-Day • Largest amphibious attack • Took place on the Normandy coast in France • The invasion was code named Operation Overlord • Two million soldiers were stationed in Great Britain for the attack, as well as thousands of airplanes, ships and tanks • D-Day began June 6, 1944, with troops pouring onto the beaches, aircraft dropping bombs from above, and ships firing ammunition from the sea • Allied troops faced heavy resistance from German troops occupying the high ground above the beaches, and the first waves of invaders experienced high casualty rates • By fall 1944, the Allies had defeated the Germans at the coast, pushed inland, and liberated Paris and Belgium X
