  1. Describing Matter What Properties Describes matter?

  2. Substance • Compounds and elements are pure substances. • It is pure, has a specific make up or composition. • Example: Water is a pure substance: • It is a compound • Molecular formula H20 • always the same

  3. Physical Properties of Matter • A physical property of a substance can be observed without changing it into another substance. • Hardness * Melting Point • Texture *Freezing Point • Color • Temperature • Solid, liquid, gas

  4. Physical Properties of metal • Luster – ability to shine • Ductility – can be shaped into a thin wire • Malleability – can be shaped into a flat surface • Conductivity – ability to transfer heat and electricity • Magnetism – attracted to magnets

  5. Chemical Properties • A chemical property will be observed when a substance changes into another substance • Example of chemical properties • Flammability • Reactivity • Ability to rust • combustion

  6. Sodium combustion with water • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTcgo46nxNE
